Wiring Standards
Much discussion on this subject calls for a handy reference.

Standard electrical wiring uses black for hot, white for common, and green for ground. Audio is not like that - instead audio uses black for cold, white or red for hot, and 'ground' is most often a bare drain wire. We should note that 'hot' or 'positive' or '+' actually means positive polarity for positive pressure at the microphone or similarly positive pressure at the loudspeaker, and that the word 'phase' is commonly but mistakenly used in the industry to denote polarity.. the use of the word 'hot' most likely is a hand-me-down power circuit term, where the black, or positive lead actually is hot (try touching it and see).
OK, Chris?

The question then arises of what to do when inevitable ambiguity creeps in..

hot/positive/tip/pin 2 cold/negative/ring/pin 3 ground/sleeve/pin 1

RJ45 - there are several standards.. the T568-B is prevalent, and specified for commercial installations, so we'll use that one. Electrically, 568-A and 568-B are identical, and as long as they're the same at both ends, and the usage of pairs is observed, it should work just fine.

MULTI-CONDUCTOR CABLES

Conquest, who supplies much of our multi-core cable, follows the Belden color code, so unless we're lucky enough to get some other kind of wire..

The cenvention at Calf has been to use the 'common' color as the 'cold' lead in the pair.

Stage Direction

In is down, down is front, Out is up, up is back, Off is out, on is in, Right is left, left is right. A drop shouldn't, And a block and fall does neither. A prop doesn't, And a cove has no water. A running crew rarely moves anywhere, A purchase line will buy you nothing, And a trap won't catch anything. Strike is work--a lot of work, And a green room isn't, thankfully. The mic is always on, The batten is always out of weight, The light is always hot, There are always nails on the stage, The ice is always slippery, The circuit is always live, The audience can always see you, And the pit is always open and down. Even if they appear otherwise, treat them as if they are! Now that you know stage directions, Break a leg!
